We are expanding our mission beyond the classroom and into the community. The Community Mapper helps young adults discover, navigate, and build a real place for themselves in the world around them.
Also known as a Community Integration Specialist for Self-Direction funding purposes in New York and New Jersey.
A Community Mapper is part explorer, part relationship builder, and part coach. They actively discover what the community has to offer — volunteer opportunities, clubs, events, and programs — and then create a personalized pathway for each participant to step into it with confidence.
Where most services stop at the front door, the Community Mapper walks through it — alongside the participant, on their behalf, and ultimately in support of their full independence.
This service is available to participants in our membership and as a standalone service. It is eligible for funding consideration under OPWDD Self-Direction (NY) and NJ DDD Goods & Services programs.

Celebrates real results
Every participant starts where they are comfortable and progresses at their own pace — from supported group activities to full independent community integration.
Internal — High Support
Activities hosted by Progress Partners to build foundational social skills in a welcoming, structured environment. Virtual game nights, speed-friending events, book clubs, and hobby groups give participants a safe starting point.
Group — Medium Support
Small group excursions into the local community, led by a Community Mapper. Volunteering at animal shelters, visiting farmers markets, attending museums, or joining fitness classes — real experiences with a trusted guide.
1-on-1 — Low Support
Helping participants find, join, and maintain their own community group independently. The Community Mapper handles logistics, role-plays interactions, and debriefs afterward — building confidence until they no longer need the support.
Animal shelters, food banks, libraries, community gardens — meaningful roles that build self-esteem and job-ready skills.
Community theater, board game cafes, adaptive sports leagues, and interest-based clubs where real friendships form.
Community college extension courses, maker spaces, art and photography classes — learning in the real world.
Local markets, cultural events, parks and recreation programs — everyday community life, made accessible.
Are you someone who genuinely believes every person belongs in their community and has something meaningful to contribute? Do you love making connections, exploring your local area, and coaching others toward independence? This role was made for you.
